The Berlin government has adopted an ambitious law to plant one million trees by 2040, more than twice as many as currently exist. This initiative, based on a citizen proposal, was voted on with a large majority, with only representatives from the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) voting against it. The law includes additional measures for creating green spaces and effectively managing rainwater, with an estimated cost of 3.2 billion euros. Parliament member Benedikt Lux from the Green Party emphasized the importance of the swift implementation of the law, mentioning that it will not be sufficient without concrete actions. The citizen initiative BaumEntscheid believes that this law is an essential step towards making Berlin greener and more resilient to climate change. The spokesperson for the initiative stressed the need for rapid action, highlighting that time is crucial in adapting to climate change.
