The Bucharest City Hall announced on Tuesday the initiation of the Green Belt project, which will encompass approximately 250 hectares of green infrastructure in Bucharest and Ilfov.
The project is part of the Integrated Urban Development Strategy, which is currently under public debate. The City Hall mentioned that it also aims to establish peri-urban forests, wetlands, and ecological corridors, involving the academic environment, civil society, and the private sector in developing an operational plan.
The purpose of the belt is to expand forests, conserve existing green spaces, and increase the area of green space per inhabitant. The institution also mentioned that this initiative is essential for reducing pollution, improving air quality, and protecting biodiversity, thus contributing to increasing the city's resilience to climate change and multiple risks.
Additionally, the City Hall has submitted the Integrated Urban Development Strategy for public debate, which will guide the planning of short, medium, and long-term projects.
