Belgium is preparing to implement an air defense system at the port of Antwerp, in response to the increasing threats posed by drones to critical infrastructure. Last year, drone incursions led to the temporary closure of airports and a military airbase.
The port of Antwerp, the second largest in Europe, has been targeted by drone sightings, including over nuclear power plants and the BASF chemical complex. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense confirmed that a NASAMS system will be installed, although specific details have not been disclosed for security reasons.
The NASAMS system, developed by Kongsberg and Raytheon, is designed to defend against drones and other aerial threats, having a shorter range compared to other systems. Port representatives emphasize the importance of protecting this transport hub, essential for Belgium's economy.
