The Swedish Minister of Migration, Johan Forssell, announced a 30% decrease in asylum applications in Sweden over the past year during a press conference. This decrease aligns with the reforms implemented by the conservative government, supported by the Sweden Democrats (SD), aimed at restricting immigration. Among the measures adopted are increased financial assistance for the return of migrants to their countries of origin, tightening the conditions for obtaining citizenship, and family reunification. Forssell also mentioned that voluntary returns of migrants have doubled, and the total number of asylum applications has decreased by nearly 60% since the beginning of the government's term in 2022. In 2025, Sweden granted 79,684 residence permits, of which only 6% were for asylum-related reasons. The government continues to work on new reforms ahead of the 2026 elections, including the possibility of revoking Swedish citizenship under certain conditions.
