American senators reached an agreement on Tuesday on a bill aimed at increasing pressure on Russia through new sanctions, the initiative bearing the name of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who recently passed away. Graham, a fervent supporter of Ukraine and an active U.S. foreign policy, died on July 11 at the age of 71 after a cardiac condition.

The bill, which could be adopted by the Senate this week, specifically targets Russian exports of natural gas and oil, essential sources of revenue for Moscow. The U.S. President would have the authority to impose sanctions on the five largest energy buyers from Russia and countries that help Russia evade sanctions. This measure could affect trade relations with China and India, major importers of Russian oil. The bill also includes sanctions against Iran.

The agreement coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Washington for Lindsey Graham's funeral, and his sister, Darline Graham, has taken on political responsibilities following his death. President Donald Trump stated that he intends to sign the bill.
