Several leaders of the Republican Party criticized President Donald Trump on Saturday for his decision to exempt Russia from the application of new sanctions adopted by Congress in September to support Ukraine. The executive order, issued Friday evening, primarily targets measures against Russia’s energy sector.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis called the decision “completely irresponsible,” arguing that the president should lower energy prices by resolving the Iranian issue, not by making concessions to Vladimir Putin. Senator Ted Cruz, in turn, described the exemption as a “mistake.”

Republican Representative Michael McCaul urged Trump to reverse the decision, while Senator John Cornyn said that Lindsey Graham, the legislation’s sponsor who died in the summer, would have been saddened by this development.

The measure was also denounced by authorities in Kyiv. It comes days after an agreement between Washington and Moscow allowing the United States to import significant quantities of Russian diesel, amid rising pump prices and the approaching November legislative elections.

The Graham Act, enacted in mid-September, represented Congress’s first major action against Moscow since Trump returned to the White House. Democrats, who are seeking to regain control of Congress, are also criticizing the decision, which Chuck Schumer said gives Putin a major advantage.
