Several Republican members of Congress are threatening to block the $1.5 trillion budget requested by Donald Trump for the Pentagon, less than a week before the midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
Republicans considered defense hawks are criticizing the U.S. president for concessions made to Moscow. These include authorizing the sale of Russian diesel fuel, suspending sanctions against Russia, and slowing the defense satellite program for Ukraine.
Congressman Don Bacon said he sees no reason to fund the administration’s program, arguing that Donald Trump does not treat Russia as an adversary of the United States. Former Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell likewise made his support for the budget conditional on a tougher policy toward Vladimir Putin.
In September, Congress passed a law on sanctions against Russia by a wide majority, but Trump suspended the measures less than a month after their enactment. To pass the budget, the White House is relying on budget reconciliation, a procedure that allows measures to be approved by a simple majority in the Senate. The gamble is risky because the president needs the nearly unanimous support of Republicans.
