The Prime Minister of Ireland has announced the rejection of proposed amendments to the Constitution aimed at modernizing the text on women and the family.

The proposed amendments would have extended the notion of family beyond marriage, including cohabiting relationships, and removed the idea that it is the role of mothers to fulfill 'domestic duties' in the family. However, the referendum did not attract much interest, with turnout below 50% in most constituencies.
