According to the European Commission's eighth illustrative Nuclear Illustrative Program, EU member states will need to invest €241 billion by 2050 to support nuclear energy. This includes both extending the life of existing reactors and building new ones. Commissioner Dan Jorgensen underlines the importance of nuclear energy in the transition to a clean and resilient energy system, estimating that by 2040, the majority of electricity in the EU will come from decarbonized sources. Managing radioactive waste, international cooperation and stimulating innovation in the field are also essential.
