The United Nations (UN) has announced that the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda could be more widespread than previously observed. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that the epidemic, concentrated in Ituri province, has reported over 482 suspected cases since April, including eight confirmed cases and approximately 116 deaths. The epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments.
The Director of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared a public health emergency of international concern, highlighting the scale and speed of the epidemic. In support of response efforts, WHO has sent rapid response teams and medical supplies to Ituri. The United States has announced enhanced border control measures, including health checks for travelers from affected areas, after an American citizen was infected in the DRC. Additionally, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) announced the activation of the highest level of intervention in response to the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
