A systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by European researchers concluded that the use of paracetamol during pregnancy does not increase the risk of the newborn developing autism, ADHD, or intellectual disabilities. The study, published in the journal Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women’s Health, included 43 robust studies involving hundreds of thousands of women, being considered the most rigorous analysis to date.

The researchers, led by Professor Asma Khalil, emphasized that paracetamol remains a safe option for pregnant women, thus contradicting claims made by President Donald Trump, who suggested that this medication could cause autism. They highlighted that genetic and environmental factors are more plausible explanations for previous associations, encouraging women to continue using paracetamol as directed by medical advice to avoid risks associated with untreated fever.
