The Romanian diaspora is at the center of online media attention in Romania, with a high level of interest in the run-up to the first round of voting in the 2025 presidential elections. According to data from the Permanent Electoral Authority, more than 972,000 Romanians abroad cast their vote, significantly surpassing the turnout in November 2024. The largest communities of voters were registered in Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany, highlighting the mobilization of Romanians in the diaspora.
According to NewsVibe data - an AI-powered social listening tool - there were more than 4,000 posts and articles mentioning the diaspora in the last month, totaling an estimated reach of around 62 million views. More than half of these were published in the context of the elections, with the peak of interest in the topic being May 4. Among the most discussed topics associated with the "diaspora" topic in the last month was Traian Băsescu's statement about the significant influence of the diaspora vote in the presidential elections. At the same time, the AUR party raised problems related to the organization of the voting process in the diaspora, pointing out difficulties such as queues and limited voting time. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stood out after rejecting AUR claims of a possible shortage of ballots in the diaspora, saying that 3.6 million ballots were distributed to polling stations abroad and that it is statistically impossible that they would be exhausted.

The semantic analysis also confirms how online conversations about the diaspora have focused on electoral topics, with an emphasis on Romania, Rromanians in abroad, the candidates preferred by this community (George Simion, Nicușor Dan) and institutions such as The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) and The Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With similar visibility is Crin Antonescu, with a focus on his performance in the elections and his speech in which he admitted defeat. Similarly, Marcel Ciolacu was heavily mentioned after he announced his resignation.
The names of countries in which the diaspora is active (Italy, Republic of Moldova, Spain, Germany, UK, USA) frequently appear, indicating wide geographical involvement in the voting process, with New Zealand and Auckland being mentioned prominently as the first polling station opened there. In the ranking of the most relevant sources that have frequently produced content referring to diaspora, the Adevărul website clearly stands out, being the only one with over 100 mentions. Further down the top is the alternative platform Ecopolitic, followed by Gândul and Ziare.com. The map of media activity local shows that the most mentions about diaspora came from the counties of Alba, Argeș, Sibiu, Prahova, Iași and Bihor, where local press had intense coverage. At the opposite pole, the counties with the lowest media activity on this topic were Harghita, Covasna, Ialomita and Teleorman. Overall, local press interest was highest in the west and center of the country, while the east and southeast generated less material on the subject.
