The member countries of the European Union are analyzing the possibility that Ukrainian men of military age will no longer benefit from the temporary protection offered by the community bloc, which has sheltered over four million refugees from Ukraine since the Russian invasion. The proposal was discussed in the context of the review of the EU Directive on Temporary Protection (TPD), activated in February 2022 and valid until March 2027. Internal documents of the EU Council suggest options for extending protection, but with restrictions, including the exclusion of men of mandatory military age. National governments are expressing concern over the increasing number of men arriving, arguing that the review would support both Ukraine's resistance and reconstruction efforts. In 2024, Ukraine lowered the mobilization age and implemented measures for recruitment. Discussions regarding the future of the aid scheme will take place at the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The European Commission will officially propose any changes to the scheme.
