Brussels, February 2, 2026 – The European Commission has announced the imposition of definitive anti-dumping duties on imports of candles from the People's Republic of China. The decision comes after an investigation concluded that these products enter the EU market at artificially low prices, causing significant harm to European producers.
In brief
The new duties range between 56% and 60% and will remain in effect for a period of five years. The measure aims to protect an EU industry that has approximately 9,000 employees in 80 companies. Imports from China currently account for about 140,000 tons of the total EU candle market.
The duties, which officially came into effect following the decision on January 26, range between 56% and 60%. They are set to apply for five years, serving as a shield for a domestic sector that has struggled to compete with undervalued imports. The Commission's investigation found clear evidence of "dumping" – selling goods below their normal value – which undermines local producers.
The European candle market is substantial, estimated at 620,000 tons, with a value of approximately 1.7 billion euros. However, the penetration of imports is high. Of the 170,000 tons of imported candles, an impressive amount of 140,000 tons comes from China. By applying these tariffs, Brussels aims to restore fair competition conditions for the approximately 80 companies operating in the Union, ensuring the viability of the 9,000 jobs they support.
