The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution with 141 votes in favor and 8 against, highlighting the legal obligation of states to address climate change, according to an opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the vote underscores the responsibility of governments to protect citizens from the climate crisis. The resolution, proposed by the island nation of Vanuatu, reaffirms a 2025 advisory opinion from the ICJ, which recommends reducing the use of fossil fuels. Although the opinion is not binding, it influences climate litigation globally.
The USA, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and other countries opposed the resolution, while Australia, Germany, and France voted in favor. The Trump administration had a policy of withdrawing from climate agreements, which amplified opposition to measures combating climate change.
