On Tuesday, the European Parliament voted to lift the immunity of far-right Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun, clearing the way for judicial proceedings against him in Poland. The decision concerns statements in which he allegedly questioned the Holocaust, Agence France-Presse reports.
Lifting his immunity allows Polish authorities to continue legal action against Braun, but it does not constitute a conviction or establish his guilt. Proceedings in Poland will clarify the allegations and the circumstances in which the statements were made.
Grzegorz Braun is known for his antisemitic views and is president of the Confederation of the Crown party. The case comes amid a European context in which Holocaust denial or questioning is treated as a serious offense, while the status of an MEP provides limited legal protection through parliamentary immunity.
The European Parliament’s vote removes this protection in the case in question and allows Polish authorities to move forward with their investigation and any potential judicial proceedings.
