Poland’s ambassador to Romania, Paweł Soloch, announced his resignation in a message posted on the X platform, amid the escalating political crisis in Warsaw. The diplomat said he no longer saw any possibility of continuing in the post after what he called an illegal attempt to take over the Constitutional Tribunal.
Soloch said he had informed Poland’s president, Karol Nawrocki, and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski of his decision. His resignation follows a similar decision previously announced by Poland’s ambassador to China, Jakub Kumoch, who cited the political situation in the country.
Tensions increased after the powers of Constitutional Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and his deputy were suspended for one month. On Friday, hundreds of supporters of the conservative Law and Justice party (PiS) protested outside the institution in Warsaw. Several demonstrators attempted to enter the building, and the incidents escalated into clashes with police.
President Karol Nawrocki cut short his official visit to Senegal and returned to Warsaw. The conservative opposition accuses the government led by Donald Tusk of attempting to illegally take control of the Constitutional Tribunal. The government says the measures are necessary to restore the rule of law.
