Before Prime Minister Donald Tusk's statement, tensions in Poland over the Constitutional Tribunal were already rising: supporters of the national-conservative Law and Justice party (PiS) were protesting in front of the institution, and police intervened after incidents. In one episode, a 30-year-old man was detained in Warsaw after being found with a knife, a loaded pistol, drugs, and an identification card bearing the inscription “Security,” resembling a police identification card.
The situation was intensified by harsh exchanges between institutions: President Karol Nawrocki accused Donald Tusk of orchestrating the forcible takeover of a constitutional institution, while the prime minister rejected the accusations and said that the government was seeking to restore the rule of law. Meanwhile, Nawrocki had previously cut short his foreign trip and summoned the parties to urgent consultations in Warsaw.
