A recent report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that the planet will exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit set by the Paris Agreement in the coming years due to warming caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating that humanity is rapidly heading towards a climate catastrophe.

The proposed new strategy aims to limit both the level and duration of exceeding the 1.5°C threshold, with the goal of subsequently returning below this level. A temporary exceedance of the threshold does not mean abandoning efforts to combat climate change, but every additional fraction of a degree increases the risks associated with extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity.

The report highlights that it will be necessary to phase out fossil fuels and develop carbon capture technologies to bring the temperature back below the critical threshold. It is also expected that governments will invest more in adapting to climate change, as some effects are already inevitable.
