Crucial intergovernmental negotiations to draw up the world's first-ever treaty to eliminate plastic pollution are taking place in Geneva from Tuesday. This session was called after talks deadlocked in Busan, South Korea. Production of plastic waste could increase by 50% by 2040, and a 450-strong body of scientists warns of health consequences. Negotiations focus on limits on plastic production and identifying hazardous chemicals amid conflicting interests and pressure from oil-producing countries.
