Arsenio Dominguez, the head of the International Maritime Organization, stated that Iran does not have the right to impose fees in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that such fees are illegal under international law.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Dominguez called for the rejection of these fees, warning that their introduction would create a harmful precedent for global maritime transport. His comments were made in the context of negotiations between American and Iranian officials in Pakistan, which ended without an agreement, leaving unresolved issues such as navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Dominguez dismissed the idea of needing new agreements to manage the strait, noting that the 1968 agreement between Iran and Oman has functioned effectively.

Iranian authorities have claimed the right to impose fees on ships transiting the strait, and American President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of a 'joint venture' for collecting payments between the US and Iran.
