The increase in subway fares from 5 to 7 lei could be postponed by two months, according to an order from the interim Minister of Transport, Radu Miruță, who justifies the decision by the need to evaluate the socio-economic effects on the population, which is currently under public debate.
This postponement would give Metrorex the necessary time to present a plan to reduce expenses.
"Through this Order of the Deputy Prime Minister, the interim Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, it is intended to postpone by 60 days the Order of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure no. 408/2026 for the modification of the annex to the Order of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure no. 1.026/2021 regarding the approval of subway travel fares, published in the Official Gazette, Part I no. 328 of April 24, 2026. This is justified by the need for Metrorex to evaluate the effects of the proposed fare change on demand elasticity, the modal distribution of transport within the municipality of Bucharest, and on European obligations regarding air quality, as well as the socio-economic effects on the population,' it is stated in the project published on the website of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
If the order is not approved by Thursday, the fare increase will come into effect on May 1, and a monthly subscription will cost 140 lei, compared to 100 lei currently.
We remind that Ciprian Șerban, the former Minister of Transport, explained that the price increase was a condition for budget approval, highlighting the difficulties encountered in managing the financial situation.
