The automotive industry in Germany has called for an urgent de-escalation of the tariff dispute between the USA and the European Union, after President Donald Trump announced an increase in tariffs on vehicles imported from the EU by up to 25%. Hildegard Muller, president of the German Association of Automobile Manufacturers (VDA), stated that both parties must respect the agreed trade agreement.
Trump accused the EU of not fully complying with the agreement and mentioned that the tariffs would not apply to cars produced in the USA. Muller warned that the new tariffs could have a significant impact on the German automotive industry and on consumers in the USA.
The European Commission responded that it respects its commitments and will seek clarifications from the USA. Additionally, Bernd Lange, president of the trade committee in the European Parliament, criticized Trump's behavior, stating that the USA has violated the agreement. The European Parliament is working on ratifying the trade agreement with the USA, which could be finalized in June.
