The Bolojan government has decided to reduce the number of citizens who will benefit for free from the electronic identity card, from 5 million to 3.5 million, which implies a cut of 21 million euros from the funds for implementing this project. Although electronic ID cards began to be issued in 2021, their expansion has been delayed. By 2026, the government must issue 3.5 million electronic cards, and failure to achieve this goal could result in financial penalties from the European Commission. Additional measures will be implemented to facilitate the issuance process.
