SME Romania is asking the authorities to extend by at least six months the deadline for updating CAEN codes to the Rev. 3 version, following the expiry of the September 25, 2026 deadline. The employers’ confederation warns that only one in three companies has completed the formalities so far, while numerous firms risk being affected by bureaucracy.
The request is based on the provisions of Government Decision No. 284/2025, which set the deadline for transitioning to the new classification of economic activities. SME Romania is calling for an urgent extension of the period to prevent businesses’ operations from being blocked and to avoid overburdening the National Trade Register Office.
According to the organization, the large number of applications submitted within a short period could make it more difficult to process documents at the Trade Register. In addition, companies must align their business activities with the authorizations, approvals, licenses and other documents required for operations.
SME Romania says that delays in updating the codes could lead to these documents no longer being issued and, consequently, affect entrepreneurs’ activities. The confederation is calling on the authorities for a rapid solution to complete the transition to CAEN Rev. 3 without disrupting companies’ operations.
