From October 1, 2026, Romania will substantially change its road toll system. For cars and light vehicles, the price of the road vignette will be determined not only by its validity period, but also by the vehicle’s emissions standard.
The lowest rates will apply to electric vehicles and Euro VI vehicles: 48 lei for 30 days and 254 lei for one year. For Euro IV–V cars, the same vignettes will cost 55 and 292 lei, respectively, while for Euro III or older vehicles, they will cost 62 and 330 lei. The one-day vignette will become more expensive for all categories, reaching 22–29 lei.
The reform introduces the “polluter pays” principle, against the backdrop of Romania’s vehicle fleet having an average age of approximately 16.5 years. The government estimates revenues of around 1.1 billion lei in the first three months.
Also from October 1, Romania’s tolls for crossing the Giurgiu–Ruse, Fetești and Giurgeni bridges will be scrapped. The tolls charged by Bulgaria and the one at Calafat–Vidin will remain in effect.
For trucks weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, TollRo will come into operation, a system that calculates the charge based on the kilometres travelled, the vehicle’s weight, its Euro standard and the type of road.
