The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) announced that over 30 companies from the entire supply chain of the automotive industry have agreed to collaborate within an open-source software initiative. This collaboration aims to develop the next generation of automobiles, reduce costs, and improve innovation, in the context of the CES trade show in Las Vegas. Among the participants are the automotive group Stellantis, truck manufacturer Traton, supplier Schaeffler, as well as chip companies Infineon and Qualcomm. The total number of companies involved has increased from 11 to 32, including major manufacturers such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. VDA estimates that the initiative could reduce development and maintenance efforts by up to 40% and could shorten time to market by up to 30%. Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, emphasized that this increase in participation reflects a global shift towards open innovation in the automotive sector.
