The Sinaia gondola was completely shut down after measurements indicated significant movement of support pillar 2, located near a construction site for a four-star hotel. The city hall says the landslide was caused by work carried out along the property boundary and that the system is no longer safe for the public.
According to local authorities, measurements taken of the pillar’s foundation and body indicated progressive movement in a north-northeast direction. Subsequent checks showed that the pillar had moved outside safety parameters, while the angle of the carrying-hauling cable of the GD8 Sinaia gondola had changed.
Mayor Vlad Oprea ordered the suspension of work at the site, notification of the State Inspectorate for Construction, and the convening of the Local Committee for Emergency Situations. The Police and Prahova Prefecture were also notified, while the beneficiary was ordered to stop the construction site immediately.
Geotechnical studies, expert assessments, and new measurements will follow to determine the technical solution and remedy the situation. The construction is being carried out on land owned by International SA, a company mainly controlled by members of Dan Radu Rușanu’s family. In 2024, Sinaia City Hall published the project documentation for public consultation; the area is subject to protection restrictions near the gondola infrastructure.
