Services on the first section of the Sinaia gondola, between the mountain resort and elevation 1,400 in the Bucegi Mountains, were suspended on Tuesday after Tower 2 of the installation moved outside the safety parameters. The city hall announced that the shutdown would remain in effect until the problem was fixed.
According to the local administration, measurements conducted last week indicated significant and progressive movement of the tower’s foundation and structure in a north-northeasterly direction. Subsequent checks confirmed the change in the tower’s position and that the cable had moved outside the safety parameters.
Sinaia Mayor Vlad Oprea says the movement was caused by landslides that occurred following work on a hotel built in the immediate vicinity, on Aleea Telegondolei. According to the mayor, the excavation affected the stability of the ground and the position of the tower, as well as the alignment of the roller assemblies and the cable.
The Sinaia City Hall and Transport Urban Sinaia requested additional measurements and the suspension of work at the construction site. The State Inspectorate for Construction, the Sinaia Resort Police and the Prahova Prefecture were notified, while the Local Committee for Emergency Situations was convened. The investment beneficiary was ordered to stop the work.
The authorities are discussing technical solutions for repairs with the installation’s manufacturer, Doppelmayr. Geotechnical studies, expert assessments and new measurements will follow.
