The president of the Brăila branch of the PNL, Alexandru Popa, ended up facing criminal charges after police officers stopped him in Bucharest and found that his driver’s license was suspended.

PNL Brăila President and MP Alexandru Popa faces a criminal case after being stopped while driving in Bucharest, where police found that his driving licence had been suspended. The incident took place on September 7, 2026, on Nicolae Caramfil Street, in the area covered by Police Station 2.

Traffic officers checked his identity and drew up a report after verifying the status of his licence. The investigation will establish the exact circumstances in which the MP drove during the period when his right to drive was listed as suspended.

Alexandru Popa claims that the situation resulted from an “administrative error.” He said that his licence was suspended in 2024 following a speeding penalty, but that he challenged the measure in court. According to the MP, during the proceedings he considered that the suspension no longer had effect and continued driving.

The MP says that the court recently issued a final decision, of which he claims he was not informed. He maintains that he did not receive the documents and that he had the physical licence with him at the time of the inspection. Popa also said that any communication problems could be related to the fact that he is domiciled in Brăila but also has temporary residence registered in Bucharest.

The MP stated that he would clarify the situation during the investigation and that he had acted in good faith. Alexandru Popa is a PNL MP from Brăila and president of the party’s county organization.
