Deputy Alexandru Popa caught in Bucharest driving with a suspended license

Alexandru Popa, president of the Brăila branch of the National Liberal Party (PNL), is facing a criminal case after being stopped in traffic on Monday, September 7, 2026, in Bucharest. Traffic police checked him at around 7:30 p.m. on Nicolae Caramfil Street and found that his driving privileges had been suspended.

The MP claims that the unfavorable final decision was not officially communicated to him and that, for this reason, he did not know the ban had become applicable. He said he had his physical license with him when he was stopped and would present evidence as part of the investigation. Popa suggested that the communication problems might be related to his registered address in Brăila and his temporary residence registration in Bucharest.

The investigation will determine the circumstances in which the MP drove while his license was suspended, and the documents will be examined by the Traffic Police Brigade. Popa maintains that he was unaware the suspension had taken effect and intends to support his explanation with evidence in the case. The authorities will establish whether the administrative communication issue affected his knowledge of the driving ban and whether further legal steps are warranted.
