BMW announced on Wednesday that it will eliminate approximately 8,000 jobs in Germany by the end of 2027, through a voluntary departure program, thus becoming the latest German car manufacturer to reduce its workforce due to declining profits and weak demand. The program, agreed upon with employee representatives, specifically targets administrative and development departments, without affecting production activities.
The announcement comes in a context where Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche have already announced significant staff reductions. German car manufacturers are facing challenges such as high costs of the transition to electric vehicles, competition from Chinese manufacturers, and tariffs imposed by the United States.
BMW recently lowered its profit estimates for 2026, citing a weaker sales performance in China. CEO Milan Nedeljkovic emphasized the need to intensify cost-cutting measures to improve the company's profitability. Financial results for the second quarter will be published on Thursday.
