Neptun Deep, the project dedicated to the exploitation of gas from the Black Sea, could generate revenues of over 20 billion euros for the state budget, according to former Minister of Energy, Virgil Popescu. He stated that starting in 2027, Romania could collect annually between 1.5 and 2 billion euros, without introducing new taxes for citizens or companies. The revenues would come from oil royalties, profit tax, and dividends from Romgaz, having a stable character for at least 20 years.
Popescu emphasized that the revenue estimates are based on prices from 2023, and the increase in gas prices could boost state revenues by 30-50%. The project, which was previously blocked due to an unfavorable tax framework, is now underway, with the first extractions estimated for 2027. Romania could thus become a European leader in natural gas production, significantly contributing to GDP and creating jobs. The former minister concluded that the country needs new structural revenues to overcome the fiscal crisis.
