According to the projections of the International Monetary Fund, Bulgaria is expected to surpass Greece in GDP per capita by 2030, thus improving its economic position compared to the countries in the Western Balkans. The forecasts are based on purchasing power parity (PPP), which reflects real income and living standards. Bulgaria will rise to 30th place among 41 European economies, while Greece will fall to 32nd place, marking a significant decline. Bulgaria's GDP per capita is estimated at $42,816 in 2025, compared to $32,724 for Serbia, and the difference will persist until 2030. Although Bulgaria will progress, it will remain among the lowest-income states in the EU. Romania, with an estimated GDP per capita of $48,724 in 2025, will surpass Hungary and Greece, and by 2030 will reach $62,661, exceeding Portugal as well.
