A 37-year-old Romanian woman was found dead on Thursday, October 8, in a home in the Castile-La Mancha region of Spain. The woman's husband, a Spanish citizen, was found dead in the same home, and authorities suspect that he may have killed his wife before taking his own life. Neither victim was listed in the VioGén system, which is intended to monitor cases of violence against women.
The 112 emergency service was alerted after the woman's father called because he was unable to enter the home and knew that his daughter and her husband were inside. The Civil Guard and firefighters from Motilla del Palancar, a town located approximately 40 kilometers away, intervened and found the bodies of the two. The deaths were confirmed by a medical team, and the family received psychosocial support from the Red Cross.
Regional authorities condemned the case. If it is confirmed as a crime motivated by gender-based violence, the number of women killed by their current or former partners in Spain will reach 42 this year and 1,383 since 2003. Since 2013, 539 minors have been orphaned as a result of these crimes. Victims can call the 016 helpline free of charge, around the clock, available in 53 languages.
