Pepco, the discount retailer part of the international group Pepco, has announced the closure of 28 stores in Germany, as a result of ongoing financial losses and operational difficulties. This measure will affect 165 employees, who will lose their jobs in the coming period. The company has entered insolvency to restructure its operations and reduce losses, after the German network was deemed unprofitable due to high rents, logistical costs, and intense competition.
Pepco entered the German market in 2022 but failed to meet its financial targets. The retailer has also closed stores in other European countries, including Austria, where it filed for bankruptcy. In contrast, Romania remains a profitable market for Pepco, with the recent opening of store number 500 and a turnover of 2.9 billion lei in 2024.
