Germany is preparing to make a major change in the social benefits payment system, almost completely abandoning cash and check payments starting in 2026. This decision affects hundreds of thousands of people, including recipients of Bürgergeld and families receiving allowances. Authorities argue that modernizing systems and streamlining administration are the main reasons for this transition.

Recipients will no longer be able to receive social benefits in cash, but only through direct bank transfer. Exceptions will be rare and strictly regulated. Additionally, in cases where a person does not have a bank account, payments will be suspended. However, German legislation provides the right to a basic account, and in exceptional cases, the state will ensure alternative payment methods.

For those who cannot open an account, payment cards become a temporary solution, allowing the use of funds for payments. Recipients are advised to open a current account as soon as possible and to communicate the IBAN to the competent institutions to avoid delays or suspension of payments. This change underscores the importance of quickly adapting to new requirements to ensure financial security.
