An 18-year-old young man from Bacău allegedly doused his grandmother with gasoline and set her on fire after the woman refused to give him money

An 18-year-old man from Bacău County was placed in pretrial detention for 30 days and is being investigated for attempted murder after allegedly dousing his grandmother with gasoline and setting her on fire. The incident took place at the woman’s home, where the young man had gone to ask her for money for cigarettes and alcohol.

According to investigators, the young man was under the influence of alcohol. After his grandmother allegedly refused to give him money, he is said to have filled a glass with gasoline, entered the house and doused the woman with the flammable liquid. He subsequently allegedly used a lighter to set her on fire.

The victim’s husband intervened quickly and managed to extinguish the flames before they spread through the home. The woman suffered several burns, but no spread of the fire to other areas of the property was reported.

After the assault, the young man allegedly also smashed the windows of an outbuilding in the yard. Family members claim this was not his first episode of aggressive behavior. Following the evidence gathered, prosecutors requested his pretrial detention, and the court ordered the measure for 30 days. Investigations are continuing to establish all the circumstances.
