Darryl Nirenberg delivers a message for Bucharest on the 567th anniversary of its first documentary attestation: “This city welcomed me and my family with open arms”

The United States Embassy in Bucharest sent a congratulatory message to the capital on Sunday, marking 567 years since its first documentary attestation. The message was published on Facebook amid events organized this weekend as part of the Bucharest Days 2026 program.

U.S. Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg spoke about the connection he has developed with the city during his tenure and Washington’s support for preserving Romania’s heritage. The diplomat mentioned a visit with his family to Stavropoleos Monastery in the Old Town, a historic monument restored with support from the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation.

“This city welcomed me and my family with open arms,” Nirenberg said, wishing Bucharest continued development and a strengthened partnership and friendship with the United States.

Bucharest’s first official attestation dates back to September 20, 1459. The charter issued by Vlad the Impaler mentions “Bucharest Fortress,” confirming the settlement’s existence and its use as a princely residence. The anniversary is being marked with concerts and events organized by Bucharest City Hall and its subordinate institutions.
