Dozens of hauliers protested on Sunday in the municipality of Târgu Jiu, dissatisfied with the introduction of the TollRo electronic tolling system, tax increases and rising fuel prices. The trucks were accompanied by Police and Gendarmerie units throughout the journey.
The hauliers warn that the new costs will put pressure on companies and could lead to higher prices for products and services. The protest is taking place after drivers reported problems associated with the system’s pilot phase: trucks being stranded, delays to journeys and goods being delivered late.
TollRo is set to replace the road vignette for transport vehicles. The tariff will be calculated according to the distance travelled, the vehicle’s characteristics and its polluting emissions class, in accordance with the “polluter pays” principle.
CNAIR announces that the system has not yet entered the quality acceptance stage, while the public pilot phase began on 16 September and will last at least four weeks. The company asked Parliament to postpone its implementation until 1 April 2027, warning that maintaining the 1 October 2026 deadline could generate fines without a functional payment instrument in place.
