Three people were found unconscious on Sunday in a cellar in the village of Odaia Bogdana, Fălciu commune, Vaslui County. The victims were at a property where wine had been placed in containers to ferment, and authorities suspect they were poisoned by carbon dioxide released during the fermentation process.
Crews from the Vaslui County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and the Vaslui County Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene, including a mobile intensive care ambulance staffed by a doctor, as well as crews from Murgeni, Bârlad and Huși.
According to Daniel Ungureanu, spokesperson for the Vaslui County Ambulance Service, the victims are a 76-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman, both in a deep coma, as well as a 40-year-old man found in cardiopulmonary arrest. He was successfully resuscitated by the first crew to arrive at the scene.
All three people were to be transported to hospital for medical care and further assessments. The case highlights the risk of gases released during wine fermentation accumulating in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces.
