ISU Vaslui: Two people were found unconscious in a cellar in Bârlad, most likely intoxicated by gas produced from the fermentation of wine

Two people were found unconscious on Monday, September 21, in the cellar of a household in the municipality of Bârlad, Vaslui County. They most likely suffered carbon dioxide poisoning caused by gas accumulated during the fermentation of wine.

Firefighters from the Bârlad Detachment were called in to remove the victims. One emergency response vehicle and two ambulances from the Vaslui County Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene. The two people, who had vital signs, were taken out of the cellar and handed over to the medical crews.

ISU Vaslui warns that carbon dioxide is an odorless and colorless gas, heavier than air, which can accumulate in cellars and basements during wine fermentation. The first three to five days are considered the most dangerous.

Firefighters recommend ventilating the rooms before entering, checking the air with a candle, and avoiding entering without a companion. If the flame goes out, no one should enter. Children and pets should be kept away from these areas.

On Sunday, three other people were found unconscious in a cellar in the village of Odaia Bogdana, Fălciu commune, and were transported to hospital.
