Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan addressed the challenges of the small modular reactors (SMR) project at Doicești, mentioning that Romania has already invested over 240 million dollars in this project, but is facing major financial difficulties. The feasibility study indicates the need for billions of euros in investments, and the analysis of the price of the produced energy suggests that it could be more expensive than the market price, raising questions about its profitability.

Bolojan emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in managing public funds, criticizing the leadership of Nuclearelectrica for the lack of concrete results. Although the project benefits from support from American financial institutions, uncertainties regarding funding and feasibility continue to persist. Bolojan suggested that Romania should focus on modernizing the nuclear power plant at Cernavodă, considering it a more viable option. The SMR project at Doicești remains under discussion, but its future depends on finding financial solutions and confirming technical feasibility.

"The problem we have today is that from a significant amount of money, which has been made available by Nuclearelectrica, over 240 million dollars, we have land available, purchased at a quite high value, we have a company with many employees who have spent quite a lot of money, and we have a feasibility study. The analysis of the selling price of the electricity produced in this possible reactor shows that it would be a price that is higher than the market price, which raises serious issues regarding the profitability of such a project. It seemed responsible to me that, if you respect your partners, you should inform them. Just as I did with the U.S. Embassy. This project has some problems, it would be good to analyze it as carefully as possible. If it is feasible, it should be kept and moved forward. If it is not feasible, it is much more correct to say: these are the problems," Bolojan stated.
