The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, announced that the excise duty on standard diesel will increase from 20% to 25% during the period of September 1-15, 2026, against the backdrop of rising international quotations and pump prices.
This measure will lead to a reduction of the excise duty by 701.07 lei for 1,000 liters and 829.69 lei per ton, establishing an effective excise duty of 2,103.22 lei for 1,000 liters. This temporary intervention is intended to reduce the fiscal pressure on the price of diesel, considering that, in the last two weeks, the Platts quotations for diesel have increased by 45.65%, and the average standard price by 25.45%.
The authorities emphasize that the measure aims to limit the impact of rising fuel costs on transportation and consumer goods prices. The reduction of the excise duty will be reassessed every two weeks, depending on market developments.
