The strategic project for the modernization of the Bucharest-Giurgiu railway line is making progress, with CFR Infrastructură announcing a status of 12% as of July 31, 2026.
Rail traffic on this modernized section is estimated to be fully reopened in September 2028. The project, part of Lot 2, has a value of 2.108 billion lei and is being carried out by the RailWorks Association. The works aim to modernize 93.45 km of railway line, including electrification, modernization of signaling installations, and doubling the line on the Daia-Frătești sector.
The Daia viaduct is an essential work for ensuring the circulation of freight trains. Funding comes from the Connecting Europe Facility, and the importance of the project exceeds rail traffic, connecting Romania with Bulgaria and other European countries. The Bucharest-Giurgiu line, the first railway in Romania, was inaugurated in 1869, and the current modernization represents a major step in restoring this historical connection.
