Railway traffic on the Lugoj - Timișoara Est section is reopening after nearly three months of modernization works.

The railway circulation on the Lugoj - Timișoara Est section will reopen on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 16:50, after a suspension of almost three months for modernization works. CFR SA has announced that 51 kilometers of modernized and electrified railway will be put into operation, part of the Caransebeș - Timișoara - Arad project, with a cost of 1.916 billion lei, excluding VAT.

The project aims to modernize and double the railway line, increase train speeds, and connect to the European railway network. After the completion of the works, passenger trains will be able to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h. The works include infrastructure modernization, line electrification, and the implementation of the ERTMS system. CFR SA emphasizes that the works will continue for the complete finalization of the project, respecting technical and safety requirements.
