The Romanian government has decided to reduce the excise duty on diesel by 30 bani per liter and to limit the update of pump prices to once a day, measures that are set to be implemented through an emergency ordinance, most likely on Friday. This decision was made following consultations with market operators, with other options being excluded due to the risks of supply distortion.

The funding for the reduction of excise duties will come from the additional VAT collections generated by the increase in fuel prices, from the overtaxation of profits from the exploitation of Romanian gas, and from funds from the state budget. The new measures are in addition to those already in force through Ordinance no. 19/2026, which led to a significant reduction in diesel prices. The executive will periodically evaluate the effectiveness of these policies to determine the need for modifications. The working group involved in implementing these measures includes Deputy Prime Ministers Marian Neacșu and Tanczos Barna, as well as the Ministers of Finance, Energy, and Economy.
