The Romanian government has approved the allocation of 5.1 million lei from the budget reserve fund for the continuation of urgent dredging works on the Danube, necessary to ensure the water flow for the safe operation of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, in the context of severe hydrological drought.
The funds will supplement the budget of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, being intended for deepening the Danube riverbed at two critical points: Cochirleni and Caragheorghe-Turcescu, each receiving 2.55 million lei for the extraction of approximately 50,000 cubic meters of material.
This allocation comes in addition to the 7 million lei previously approved for redistributing flows at the bifurcation of Bala–Old Danube, totaling 12.1 million lei for emergency interventions.
The government emphasizes the importance of these works for reducing the risks of unavailability of electricity production capacities and ensuring the continuity of energy supply, while also monitoring the effects on the environment and the hydrological regime.
