The European Parliament has adopted a revision of the rules regarding driving licenses, aimed at increasing road safety and reducing accidents that cause nearly 20,000 deaths annually in the EU. Among the new measures introduced is a probation period of at least two years for novice drivers, who will have stricter rules related to alcohol and safety. 17-year-olds will be able to obtain a license, but will only drive with an experienced driver. A digital license will be available, but the physical version will remain optional. The exams will emphasize awareness of risks for vulnerable road users.
Licenses will be valid for 15 years for cars and 5 years for trucks and buses, and medical checks will include vision and cardiovascular health tests. Penalties for serious violations will be applied cross-border. The new rules will come into effect 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the EU, and member states have three years to implement them.
