The European Union will implement new regulations for the design, production, collection, and treatment of end-of-life vehicles starting from August 13.

The European Commission estimates that between 10 and 12 million vehicles reach the end of their life cycle in Europe each year, generating environmental problems and losses of valuable materials. The new standards aim to recover and recycle materials such as oil, aluminum, copper, and plastic, thus contributing to resource security and reducing dependence on imported raw materials.

Automakers will need to provide clear instructions for dismantling parts, and the regulation introduces mandatory targets for the use of recycled plastic in vehicles.

Additionally, the responsibility of manufacturers for the treatment of end-of-life vehicles will be strengthened, ensuring proper funding for recycling processes. The new rules also restrict exports of vehicles, allowing only roadworthy cars to be sent outside the EU, thus ensuring the recovery of valuable materials in the European economy.
